Different Scriptures/texts describe rudrakshas differently using different terminology and anecdotes.

1) Rudrakshajabalo  Upnishad
Upanishadas are very important Shruti Granthas. The Scriptures of Sanatana tradition are divided in to three categories.

I}Shruti: Directly heard from the cosmetic truth and recorded by Rishis (enlightened person). Vedas, Upanishadas and agamas are included in this category.

II) Smriti: Include versions and instructions of Rishis. Manu smriti falls in this category.

III) History: The recorded mythological History of mankind. This includes Puranas.

There are 108 Upanishadas, all written in Sanskrit. Every Upanishada is one or other way connected to Vedas. Out of 108, only 14 Upanishads are dedicated to Shiva. Rudrakshajabalo Upanishada is one of them.

Rudrakshajabalo Upanishada is a dialogue between ‘Klagnirudra’ and ‘Rishi Sanatkumara’ (Bhusunda). Sage Sanatkumara approaches and requests him to explain for him as to what is Rudraksha? How they are manifested? What is the procedure of wearing them? etc. Kalagnirudra Explains and the dialogue goes on and on.

2) Shivmahapurana
Shivmahapurana is one of 18 major Texts of PURANA genre. Primarily the manuscript revolves around Lord Shiva and Goddess of power Parvati. It speaks about Shiv centred Genology, Mythology, Ethics, Yoga, Tantra, Bhakti and related topics. There are 12 Sanhitas in Shivmahapurana amongst them Viddeshwar Sanhita deals with Rudraksha. Author of this Purana is Ved-Vyasa. It is in dialogue format. The dialogue is between Soot (the principal disciple of Vyasa) and other sages. Every new chapter begins with ‘soot says.’ His role was to visit different hermitages of different sages and dispense the knowledge in the form of Kathas (telling fact in the form of story).

One day he reaches to Shounakji’s (A sage) hermitage narrates the story of Rudraksha. He says ‘I will tell you the facts and virtues of Rudraksha, the most dear and amiable offering for Shiva. I am narrating for you the story of history, origin and importance of Rudraksha. This is nothing but the actual dialogue between Lord Shiva and Lord Parvati recorded as it is. …….and the story continues.

The verses talk everything about Rudraksha.

3) Akshamalika Upanishad
This Upnishada is structured as a debate between King Prajapati and Guha (Kartikeya). Prajapati addresses is curiosities to Guha about the procedure and rules of constituting Akshamala, the items, the colours of threads, Mantras, significance and other features. Guha guides and explains him everything in relation to Akshamala.

4) Brihajjbala Upnishada
In this again Rishi Santkukara and Kalagni Rudra talking face to face. Kalagni Ruda narrates the story of Manifestation and spread of Rudraksha. He tells him that Rudraksha is manifested from tear drops of Rudra therefore it is a property of Shiva. Rudraksha and Rudra are not different entities.

5) Ram Rahashya Upanishada
This Upanishadada recommends to use Rudrakshamala for Jaap.

6) Rudra Rhidaya Upnishad
A debate betweaen Ved Vyasa and his son Shuka. Shuka is on receiving side. Vyasa preaches him in the following way.
हृदयं कुंडलीभस्मरुद्राक्षगणदर्शनम्| तारसारं महावाक्यंपंचब्रह्माग्निहोत्रकम् |
He says wearing Sacred Rudraksha and Bhasma on the body is equivalent to doing 5 Agnihotra Yaggyas continuously.

7) Trimurai
This yet another Scripture written in praise of Shiva/Rudraksha. It’s in Tamil Language. It has 12 Volumes.
